Entry Requirements

  • GCSE: For all applicants, Grade C or above, or Grade 4 under newly reformed GCSE grading, in English Language and Mathematics, or equivalent. Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.
  • A-level subjects: No specific subjects required. Points from General Studies and AS-Level subjects (not taken onto full A-Level) can be included towards overall tariff. You must have a minimum of two A-Levels.
  • EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: No specific subjects required.
  • Access: Achievement of the Access to HE Diploma; to include 15 level 3 credits at merit.
  • Baccalaureate IB: No specific subjects required.

Year 0 (Foundation Year)

  • Data Analysis and Design

You will study the Foundation Year alongside students from our other Surveying, Construction and Property courses, and so you may be able to transfer to a course in one of these areas at the end of the Foundation Year.

The normal expectation is that you must pass all Year 0 modules before progressing to Year 1.

Year 1

On these modules, you will learn the basic principles and key foundation knowledge in Building Surveying.

  • Building Science
  • Construction Technology and Services
  • Design Processes

Year 2

As you progress, you will apply the knowledge and skills you have learnt through real-life scenarios and situations.

  • Residential Refurbishment and Maintenance
  • Commercial Development
  • Procurement and Contract Law
  • Professional Practice for the Built Environment
  • Analysis of Building Defects
  • Building Surveys and Professional Consultancy

*Optional placement year

All students are encouraged to spend their third year on placement. The curriculum in the second year includes support finding this placement. Students who undertake a placement year will complete a work-based research project.

Final Year

In the final year, greater emphasis is put on scholarly activity and professional judgement. In addition to studying core modules, you will apply your learning either through a Work-based Research Project related to your placement, or through studying the Collaborative Practice module bringing together students of multiple disciplines.
