Curriculum

Year 1

Year 1 will give you a sound understanding of core concepts in geology, including rock composition, mineral and rock forming processes, Earth structure, plate tectonics, geological time, and interpretation of the geological development of regions using maps and other representations. It will also allow you to take additional modules in physical geography, environmental sciences, biology, chemistry and modern languages.

Year 2

Year 2 will give you the key skills required of a professional geoscientist in structural geology, geological mapping, sedimentology, igneous and metamorphic processes, tectonics and global processes, geochemistry and natural resource geology.

The Research and Career Skills for Geoscientists module puts you in seminars with geoscience professionals from industries such as mineral exploration, petroleum geology, environmental geology and engineering geology. They will be there to give you careers advice and answer any questions you might have about life after university.

There are no options for this year of the course as this is where you study many of the modules needed for professional accreditation.

Year 3

In Year 3, you will study advanced and interdisciplinary aspects of the earth sciences in modules that integrate science with industrial or professional practice. You will also produce a dissertation that includes a critical evaluation of published research as well as your own primary data from geological mapping.

Final Year

The final year will allow you to develop specialist knowledge in areas such as rock mechanics, palaeoenvironments, environmental geochemistry, hydrogeology, petrology and mineral resources. It will provide training in research methodologies, field and analytical techniques, and report writing so you can independently conduct a research programme that shows evidence of originality, decision making and independent learning ability.

The Environmental Geology/Professional Practice module presents you with an industrial scenario, and guides you through the professional aspects of evaluating, reporting and presenting your findings as well dealing with scientific aspects of the investigation – an experience that is directly transferable to employment.
