Curriculum

This International Foundation Programme in Business Management, Mathematics and Economics comprises a mix of compulsory core units (5 units) and optional units.  All units have a credit value of 12. To pass the end examination and complete the qualification, a student must pass all 5 mandatory units, in addition to 2 of the 3 optional units, to achieve a total of 84 credits.

Semester 0 is taught from September to December and provides IELTS classes for those students who need to progress from level 5.0 to 5.5 prior to tackling the academic section of the course. The course involves 15 hours per week of tuition for one semester. The IELTS exam tests the skills of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening in equal measure. Classes reflect this. In the reading classes students will be helped to improve their skills of reading for gist and for specific information in a limited time. They will also be given guidance in how to write coherently and accurately and on how to improve their oral communication and listening skills.  Progression onto Semester 1 is subject to the student being able to demonstrate a level of English language sufficient for coping with the academic demands of the rest of the course. This will be determined internally by Holborn College staff.

Semester 1 is taught from January to March and is spent studying five compulsory units. Learners who have already achieved GCSE Maths at Grade A-C will be exempt from the Mathematics and Statistics for Business unit. Therefore they will be awarded the 12 credits for this unit and only 4 units will be studied in Semester 1.

Semester 2 is taught from April to June and students will study 2 core modules and 2 optional modules. Learners who wish to take the Mathematical and Statistical Concepts, Theory and Practice optional unit must have achieved GCSE Maths at Grade A-C as a prerequisite for taking this unit.
