Curriculum

The International Foundation Programme (IFP) is designed specifically for international students (non-EU), and is made up of 4 components:

  • Studio Practice (Art and Design)
  • Cross School Project
  • English Language (for students with an IELTS score 6.0 or below)
  • Critical Theory

Studio Practice – The bulk of the course is focused on developing a strong beginning in studio practices for both Fine Art and Design. It provides specialised projects and tuition by a small staff team in dedicated studios, with additional contributions by tutors from across the academic departments.

Cross School Project – This is a two week project that takes place in the term one, involving all 1st year students. Students get the chance to meet and work with other students that are studying across the GSA campus in specialized areas of Design, Fine Art, and Architecture.

English Language – This provides English language support to enable students to improve their overall ability and achieve the required IELTS threshold (6.0) for progression to 2nd year. It will enable students  to develop the ability to talk, listen, read, and write about their work in appropriate conceptual terms, and to develop creative approaches to their studio practice informed by critical discourse in lectures and studio discussion groups.

Critical Theory – This is delivered by the Forum for Critical Inquiry (FoCI). It is a cross-school and externally linked critical mass of diverse research expertise in broad-based critical studies for contemporary creative practices in design, art and architecture. The range of teaching styles varies from traditional keynote lectures to interactive discussion groups and experiential learning.
