Warrington is an industrial town in the north west of England situated on the River Mersey mid-way between Liverpool and Manchester and has a population of around 200,000. However, the nearest city to Warrington is Thelwall, which was granted city status by Saxon ruler King Edward the Elder in 923.

Historically the town is in the county of Lancashire, but administrative changes by the government in 1974 meant that  Warrington came under Cheshire County Council. The town became a Unitary Authority on 1 April, 1998.

Warrington is twinned with four cities: Hilden, Germany; Lake County, Illinois, USA; Nachod, Czech Republic and Mwanza, Tanzania.
