About Royal Drawing School

The Royal Drawing School is an independent, not-for-profit resource that aims to raise the standard and profile of drawing through teaching and practice. We are one of only a few institutions in the world offering in-depth, quality tuition in drawing from observation

The Royal Drawing School runs over 250 different full and part-time drawing courses each year for adults and children of all ages and abilities.

Our courses are taught by a specialist faculty of over 75 practising artists, and we are committed to the continued training of future teachers of drawing.

All our courses are heavily subsidised, with a wide range of scholarships, bursaries and concessions making them accessible to all, regardless of background or circumstance.

Accommodation

Dumfries House
Applications to the Dumfries House artists’ residencies are currently open to alumni and faculty of the Royal Drawing School and to applicants through our partner organisations, for whom drawing is part of their practice. Uk applications are by invitation only. Fully funded residencies are available throughout the year, and provide a private studio and self-catering accommodation on the Dumfries House estate for up to four artists at any one time.

Pignano House
The Moritz-Heyman Residencies at the Artist's House in Pignano, Volterra, Tuscany are open to emerging and established painters from the UK, for whom drawing is part of their practice. Pignano offers fully funded residencies available throughout the year, lasting between two and four weeks, which include the use of a studio incorporated in its own private house. Selection for residencies will be made by a distinguished jury of artists and curators.
