Durham City is located in the North East of England. It is a city that is rich in heritage with a deep rooted tradition as a centre for learning. The region is also rich in history, with a Roman heritage, and medieval castles set in magnificent scenic countryside. Nearby there is a spectacular coastline which is easily accessible.
The skyline of Durham city is dominated by Durham Cathedral, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered to be one of the best examples of a Norman cathedral anywhere in the world. Durham Castle, which is also a World Heritage Site, sits alongside the cathedral.
Durham is the home of the third oldest, and one of the most prestigious universities in England. The presence of a large student body makes the city student friendly and it is also considered to be a safe city. The city has numerous cafes, restaurants, bars and independent boutiques, nestled alongside some well-known high-street stores.
New College Durham does not own any halls of residence however in Durham there is a wide range of accommodation options.
Private Halls of Residence
There are several private halls of residence in Durham City that provide a range of accommodation options like bedsits, individual flats or shared facilities. Prices start from £105.00 per week.
Private Rented Accommodation
Most private rented accommodation in Durham is provided by private landlords or landlord consortiums. Prices can range from £70 per week upwards. Some landlords include certain bills in their rent, for example water rates. All landlords in the private rented sector in Durham will charge a refundable deposit (this is normally equivalent to one month’s rent).
Homestay Accommodation
The College works with a private provider to facilitate homestay accommodation. This option is mainly for students who are under 18. Please note that most homestay accommodation is a bus journey from the College.
