Too Many Lawyers? We Don't Have Enough

Not quite.

The legal profession, like so many others, has been permanently disrupted by a wave of technology-fueled globalization in ways few could have anticipated a decade ago. The rise of the sharing economy companies like Uber and Airbnb hit critical mass in public popularity disrupting long-standing, traditional ways many businesses operate. These new wave of companies are wreaking havoc with long-standing regulatory processes, zoning laws, condo rules, and tax regimes that have been put in place to govern things like taxi rides and local accommodations. That spells opportunities for lawyers, who have to sort out the legal mess that such innovation results in.

Apart from the unstoppable rise of the share economy, robots steal today’s spotlight as well - self-driving cars, humanoid robots, pet-like autonomous robots, home robots, or social robots. They are no longer science fiction or things you only see in Hollywood movies. Robots are unquestioningly getting more sophisticated by the year, and as a result, are becoming an indelible part of our daily lives. But, as we start to increase our interactions and dependence on robots, an important question needs to be asked: What would happen if humans actually hurt a robot, or even commit a murder — either deliberately or by mistake? What happens if a robot kills a human? While the vision of robots roaming on the streets may seem like a distant and perhaps dystopian dream - depending on your opinion of robots - the reality of machines living alongside with humans isn’t far off at all. In fact, it’s already here. It would appear, therefore, that we're not too far from the day when robots will start to demand their one phone call.

But lawsuits didn’t just stop there. Google Glass, which leads the way in the digital era, has stirred controversy and they definitely will not be the last. Known as a “stalker’s dream” and a “privacy nightmare”, Google Glass has been having a tough time across the pond since day one. That’s why you’ve probably seen lawyers laughing in their beard all the time while getting paid battling in court. Unless innovation dies, lawyers will live on.

Lawyers seem to be like so many things in life: we can't live with them, and can't live without them. There are gobs of opportunities for lawyers in Malaysia. It’s no secret that there will always be an ethically-challenged client around desperate to hire you...which is why your career will still exist in the future.

If you're okay with the eye-rolls when you tell someone you're a lawyer, and especially if you desire to be a principled and honorable member of the profession, then we encourage you to consider this gig as your chosen career path. The money is quite attractive too! Something like RM 3,500 (USD 805) a month on average for a first year lawyer. As it is usually the case of “I must do what my neighbors do”, salary increment by bigger firms may force smaller firms to follow suit in order to maintain the best talent. A junior partner in a decent firm should make at least RM 15,000 (USD 3500) a month. And the top corporate attorneys in big companies can make a some handsome tens of thousand or more just in one payday lawsuit.
