The Difference Between a University and an Institute of Technology in New Zealand

The New Zealand government has capped the number of universities in New Zealand at eight. All eight of New Zealand’s universities rank in the world’s top 500 and have many courses which rank in the world’s top 50.

Universities are generally divided into a number of academic departments, schools or faculties.

The average cost of studying at a university in New Zealand is between NZ$25,000-29,000 (Per Year) for a Bachelor’s Degree with an average duration of three years. The average cost of a postgraduate/masters qualification is between NZ$38,000-45,000 (Per Year). At PhD level, all students, both domestic and international pay the same fees, approximately NZ$6,500 (Per Year).

In New Zealand, you would be better off to choose an Institute of technology if you wish to have an education that prepares you for a particular job, for example Nursing, Design, Construction, Applied business, Applied accounting etc… However, if you were looking to do something like Medicine or Veterinary you would be obligated to choose a university. Universities are also a better choice for those wishing to follow a research based academic career and/or technical, such as Law, Psychology, International Relations, Politics etc.. But most courses are offered at both Universities and Institutes of Technology.
