When I just graduated high school, I had no clue about which course to study, let alone how to apply for a PTPTN loan.
Back then, I wished I had someone to guide me through the steps.
I eventually found out that the PTPTN registration process was not that complicated!
The application is actually a breeze, as long as you are aware of the rules and process in order to avoid any inconveniences.
PTPTN (Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional) is an agency under the Ministry of Education that provides education financing for students who wish to pursue tertiary education in local institutions.
What are the requirements to apply for PTPTN?
First, you have to check the requirements stated on the PTPTN official website. Make sure you are eligible for the application.
*MOE - Ministry of Education, MQA - Malaysian Qualifications Agency
After meeting the requirements, what's next?
Applying PTPTN online is never that complicated; all you have to do is follow the steps that are necessary for a successful application.
How to apply PTPTN online?
1. Open a bank account
You must open a bank account that is specified by PTPTN for the institution you’re enrolling at. (Check the bank specified by PTPTN for different IPTA and IPTS.)
2. Open an SSPN-i account
SSPN-i stands for Skim Simpanan Pendidikan Nasional. We suggest you register for this account at the following banks: Maybank (recommended), Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (Bank Islam), Agrobank, Bank Rakyat and RHB Bank.
3. Buy a PIN number
You can do so at BSN (Bank Simpanan Nasional) for RM5. The PIN number is necessary for the online application and it is only valid for 6 months.
4. Log in to the website
Log in to http://www.ptptn.gov.my/gateway/ to complete the application. Fill in your personal details carefully and correctly as any minor mistakes may lead to the rejection of your application. Once you are 100% certain that every detail and information you’ve filled is correct, click 'Submit'.
5. Check the application status
It is best to do so after 7 working days of the online application closing date. This way, you can follow up with the application status to see if it’s approved.
If your application is rejected, don't give up! You can seek advice from PTPTN to appeal your application.
PTPTN application has been approved, now what?
The next step is to make sure you have all the documents you are required to submit. All of these have to be photocopied single-sided and in A4 size:
- One copy of your identity card
- One copy of your SPM/O-level(or other equivalents) certificate (please be noted that the copy of SPM result transcript will only be accepted if the period of time commencing from year of the SPM to the year of the application does not exceed 2 years)
- One copy of the official offer letter from IPT (Higher Education Institute)
- One copy of your personal account number statement / book
- One copy of the pre-university certificate and transcript (STPM/A-levels/ Diploma/ Foundation/UEC or other equivalents)
- One copy of parents’ payslip (within the last 6 months) / BE form (latest) / income certification form / letter of confirmation of unemployment for housewife or retired parents
- Two sets of PTPTN agreement and its Letter of Offer (printable from the PTPTN website once the online application has been done)
For those who submit their applications in the second semester or beyond have to prepare two more additional supporting documents:
- One copy of the confirmation letter of the student status from university/college
- One copy of the examination results of each of the previous semesters
That's it, you're done with the application!
The next questions are:
- What is the loan amount that you will most likely receive?
- How to repay the loan?
