Pokémon Go Beginner’s Guide: Jargons Defined

Hey trainers! It is just a week since Pokémon Go launched in most of the countries in Southeast Asia. Probably you are catching whatever creature that appears around you, but you have definitely heard people saying some jargons like “rare Pokémon” “evolve that Pokémon” “Pokéstop” “hatch the egg” “up level” “curve ball” “what’s your team” “battle at gym” “revive/potion” but… What’s all that? 

 

“Rare Pokémon”

How do you define rarity? There’s actually no defihsnite list of Pokémon that’s defined “rare,” because different location has different types of Pokémon. But there’s a list of legendary Pokémon though: Ditto, Mew, Mewtwo, Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno.

Also, many claims the following Pokémon are rare to catch, though you can evolve some of them:
Gyarados (can evolve from Magikarp), Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, Chansey, Magmar, Venusaur (final form of Bulbasaur), Blastoise (final form of Squirtle), Charizard (final form of Charmander), Aerodactyl, Tauros, Snorlax, Lapras, Porygon, Kangaskhan, Alakazam, Mr. Mime, Farfetch’d, and Dragonite (final form of Dratini).

(PS: Magmar, Aerodactyl, Kangaskhan, Alakazam, Dratini, and Dragonite has been appeared on “Sighting” at Mid Valley Megamall. And our staffs just caught Magmar, Dratini, and Dragonite earlier this week!)

 

“Evolve that Pokémon”

You can unlock more types of Pokémon if you evolve them. Note that some Pokémon has two forms, one form, and some can’t be evolved. You can only evolve the Pokémon that has the green evolve button.

Check if you have enough Candy to evolve (Tips: catch the same type of Pokémon to get candy, you can transfer your Pokémon to get 1 candy too.)

 

 

“Go to Pokéstop and Spin”

You know you have some pokéballs with when you first playing it, but they will run out after you start catching more Pokémons. Pokéstops are there for you to get your balls. Go near to the blue stand until it turns into round shape. Tap and spin the image to get the items. It’s rare in your community? Stay there for a little longer, and spin it again after five minutes.

If you’re not sure what you got from a Pokéstop, you can check from your journal (tap picture > tap bottom right hand corner > select journal). Whatever you earn depends on what level you are and what items you’ve unlocked from the previous levels.

“Hatch the Egg”

Check if you have received an egg --go back to the map, tap the Pokéball at the bottom-center of the screen > tap Pikachu picture at left > tap egg at the top right-hand corner.

You can hatch the egg by assigning it in an incubator. It’s advisable to put:

• 2km or 5km-eggs into the infinity-used incubator 
• 10km-egg into the 3-uses incubator 

to maximise its usage. 

You have to walk the mentioned distance in order to hatch it. The table below shows the possible outcome of the eggs.

Note that the system’s definition of “walking” is speed below 24km/h, so you can’t walk too fast or drive to reach the distance. 

 

“Up Level”

You might notice there’s a progress bar shown below your avatar. That’s the experience (XP) you need to get to go to the next level. Currently, there are 40 levels in the game and you’ll get something in return when you achieve a certain level. 

 

 

 

“what’s your team”

When you reach level 5, you can choose to join any of these teams: Team Instinct (Electric), Team Mystic (Ice), and Team Valor (Fire). Choose wisely as you cannot change your team once you have already chosen.

One important thing to consider is to check which team is appearing more in your neighbourhood (you'll know by seeing the colour of the gym). It’ll be easier for you to level up if you put your Pokémon into your teammate’s gym and let it defend the gym (and get trained). Every successful defence will earn you 10 coins.

“battle at gym”

The other way to earn XP and train your Pokémon is through battle. Once you have reached Level 5 and chose a team, you can only battle at gym (still no rumours saying Niantic might be bringing in battle between trainers, just like the Nintendo Gameboy version!). You have to go near enough to the gym in order to join the battle.

Each gym has level and prestige. All you have to do is win battle at an opposing gym to decrease their prestige. When prestige is down to zero, the gym will become neutral (turned to grey colour) and available for anyone to join.

The battle is really simple. Choose six Pokémons with most Combat Points (CP), Health Points (HP), or the type of the Pokémon (for example, fire-type has more efficient attack towards grass-type and normal-type Pokémon).

Tap the opponent’s Pokémon as fast as possible to impose damage, and swipe left or right to avoid opponent’s attack. When the Pokémon is knocked out, you’ll win the battle and you’ll automatically proceed to fight another gym member. When your Pokémon is low on HP, tap your backpack to feed it potions.

“revive/potion”

“What? Revive? Will my Pokémon die?” Don’t panic just yet. During gym battle, your Pokémon will be injured and will be knocked out from the game if they are out of Health Points (HP). In order for them to back to full health, you need to feed them potion or revive them if they’d been knocked out.
You can get the revive and potion after Level 5, at the Pokéstop. You can get better potion as your level increased.
