Malaysian Students Achieve Outstanding Results at the Cambridge Assessment International Learner Awards

PETALING JAYA, 26 April 2019 – Malaysian learners have done it again as 116 learners from 35 schools were named top achievers at Cambridge Assessment International Education’s (Cambridge International) Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards.

Held at Hotel Armada Petaling Jaya, the ceremony acknowledged the exceptional performance of students in the November 2018 examination series for Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge International AS & A Levels.

This year’s awards ceremony presented a total of 133 awards for achievements in Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge International AS & A Levels. Among the recipients, 24 learners were awarded ‘Top in the World’ for Cambridge International AS Level Mathematics while 28 learners received ‘Top in the World’ for Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics without coursework.

Additionally, three awards were presented to students who obtained first place in ‘Best Across Three Cambridge International A Levels’, ‘Best Across Four Cambridge International AS Levels’ and ‘Best Across Eight Cambridge IGCSEs’.

Dr Ben Schmidt, Regional Director, Southeast Asia & Pacific, Cambridge Assessment International Education said: “Learners from Malaysia continue to be an inspiration to us all because the number of award recipients from this country has remained significantly high in recent years."

He continued, "In fact, Malaysia is the only country where this award ceremony is held twice a year due to the sheer number of learners being awarded. Without a doubt, this is the result of hard work, perseverance, and sheer passion to achieve excellence in their endeavours. Among the many things that they have learnt and will continue to learn, I truly hope that the one lesson our learners take to heart is the lesson of how persistence and zeal is the path to success.”

Tan Hui Ru Kimberley of Sunway College, who achieved two ‘Top in the World’ awards for Mathematics and Thinking Skills as well as a ‘Best Across Four’ Cambridge International AS Level award said: “The Cambridge AS Level curriculum was structured in an easy-to-understand way and enables me to remember what was taught in class, instead of just memorising facts. 

“It also trained me to become a resourceful learner, one where I learnt that information comes from multiple sources and not just from text books. Going through online reading materials, speaking with my lecturers and conversing with my peers helped me understand my lessons better,” she added.

Meanwhile, Tan Guan Yu, from Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur said “The Cambridge IGCSE has helped me delve into different subjects, which has been a key deciding factor in narrowing down my choices to further my studies. Plus, I’ve also learnt discipline, time and priority management which has been invaluable in my journey as a student.”

Tan Guan Yu is the recipient of four awards, including Top in the World in Additional Mathematics, Physics, Mathematics (without coursework) and first place in the ‘Best Across Eight Cambridge IGSCEs’. Both Kimberly and Guan Yu are among the many Malaysian high achievers who were recognised for more than one accolade at this year’s Cambridge Learner Awards.
