Affecting 700 students locally and internationally, the minister said he has received complaints from high achieving students who were promised to obtain the scholarship.

Wee has asked the Prime Minister to consider re-instating the scholarship. Speaking to Sin Chew Daily, Datuk Wee said “The prime minister understands that the economy is not good at the moment and the people are facing a heavy burden, so he has instructed the chief secretary to the government and JPA to come up with a new solution.” Prime Minister Najib Razak has asked the chief secretary and JPA a week to submit an alternative to resolve the issue.

He added, “I can’t say for certain if there will be a change of decision, but we (MCA) have tried our best to appeal the matter because we don’t know how the economic situation will develop.”

Meanwhile, Mara scholarships have not yet withdrawn. When asked regarding this, Datuk Wee declined to comment as according to him, he had not heard of it yet.
