No matter what your child decides to do in life, just keep in mind that a good, well-rounded education grooms them for any profession. It’s crucial for organizations that their people have the ability to solve problems using the right skills, write and communicate well, and possess the intellectual capacity to contribute and analyse ideas. Our children will eventually become teachers, professionals, experts, and custodians of the world that we live in. It is our responsibility to ensure they are prepared with the ability, proficiency, as well as the right attitude to undertake the challenges that they will face in the future beyond the comfort of their homes University education will present your child a myriad of opportunities in life and here is a simple guide you can follow to facilitate your child’s preparation for university while they are still in school.
Foster the topic early
It’s never too early to talk to your child about ambitions and dreams, and when your children are in their teens, to help them realise that Higher Education is a way to achieve their ambitions. The knowledge that they gain and the subjects that they learn in secondary school matters to them and their future. Furthermore, it’s imperative to convey your expectations early on to your child about their performance in school. Throughout their school years, it is essential to communicate and have regular conversations with them about their projects and coursework, objectives, and the significance of education. Moreover, fostering a positive environment early motivates them in developing good study habits and to create a practice of setting and reaching goals. So, it’s sensible to start early. No matter how occupied your child is, it is never too early to start planning for university and discussing with them about it.
Secondary school is a time that builds character
It’s true after spending six years in secondary school, students might still feel like they are completely ill-equipped for the trials of university. University entry standards have magnified over time but ultimately going to university also demands for maturity, passion in learning and independence. Apart from rigorous learning and examinations, secondary school can develop the responsibility, grit and agility in the student – qualities that will help with university life. For example, with guidance and motivation, your child can learn how to cope with stress of assignments or school environments. Knowing how to manage daily stress will prepare your child for the inevitable pressure that will come with university education.
Extracurricular activities make children more organised and happier
Another critical component is taking part in extracurricular activities. It teaches your child to maintain a demanding schedule and essentially inculcates the lifelong skill of time management. University classes are scheduled for extensive hours and take place less days during the week, which allows for involvement in clubs and societies amidst the hours filled with finishing assignments and studying. Managing a demanding workload in secondary school combined with extracurricular activities is a primer to the typically frantic schedule students will experience in university. Clearly having a sense of time management will allow students to best accommodate their extracurriculars and class timetable. Further to teaching them how to balance between work and play, analyses have indicated that children who participate in extracurricular activities perform well academically and enjoy going to classes more. Much to their advantage, extracurricular activities help students to become more outgoing, increase confidence, gain new skills and enjoy themselves.
Recognise their talents and appreciate their dreams
Before deciding higher education choices with your child, have a genuine understanding of what’s important to them, what their interests are and what is their dream. From here you can help to foster their talents by exposing them to the right activities and education routes. If they have a specific ambition, then it is advantageous that they acquire the skills and knowledge early on through additional classes or activity clubs. If their interests are broader, expose them to different types of activities and have a regular conversation with them about the future without applying the pressure. Encourage a holistic setting where their ambitions and goals can be facilitated and harnessed but not being imposed upon them.
As much as you can plan in advance for your children’s higher education or university life, it is of course as important to let your children develop their interests and goals in time and in this respect every child has their own pace. As this article has explored, secondary school is a time to build their individuality apart from their academics so encourage them to participate in extracurricular activities and broaden their horizons through classes or internships. Instil a happy and optimistic attitude towards goals from a young age, and inspire them to do their best. In the long run, these will help them create more choices for themselves in life after school.
