In an interview with the New Straits Times (NST), Rujhan revealed that several agents, previously employed by legitimate institutions of higher education have been attempting to scam naïve students - and many of them succeeding in this venture. The end result has left many students with fake certificates for unregistered institutions, killing two birds with one stone; gaining profits themselves and disqualifying several potential students turned employees from obtaining a job.
Shrouded under the blanket of anonymity, an MQA officer revealed several details of such scams to NST, that of, even though Section 92 of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency Act 2007 allows for officers of the organisation to step into and investigate the premises of any higher education institution, such has not been the case. The aforementioned officer went on to disclose of a prior experience where MQA officers were locked in the premises of an institute by the staff themselves, even after having displayed their authority cards and intentions. Moreover, the officers were accused of being the perpetrators as well, of “distributing fake offer letters with our logo and watermark to the public.”
Laws have previously been placed and as of yet such types of scams are rampant in Malaysia. In order to combat this, MQA has teamed up with the Higher Education Ministry and released several measures, such as the Malaysian Qualifications Register mobile application, which assists students and parents in the verification of potential programmes of study.
