EasyUni Staff

The first stop of Empowering the Youth’s workshop was set at the Raffles University Iskandar, Johor with speakers from different industries invited to speak about their experiences. Industry leaders, Darren Guok of My Aone Learning, one of the leading online marketplaces for offline lessons in Southeast Asia. Sam Tieh of WeBuildEasy, a revolutionary online platform that turns home design industry as easy as online shopping, as well as Andrei Beno and Viktor Kyosev from Snaplio, a Denmark based company that helps people to find, compare and book the best local photographer, even when you are abroad, spoke to students about finding opportunities to learn skills, managing their finances, and helping themselves during these trying times.

Darren Guok of My Aone Learning kickstarted the event

Guok kickstarted the event by sharing his experience on becoming an entrepreneur who wanted to help students to learn.

In his session, he asked the students “What do you wish to achieve in life?” In which he shared his life-changing moment after he attended an internet marketing course. Even with a doctorate degree in Chemistry, he found his real passion in providing direct value to the community. He even declined a job offer from London to pursue his passion. Although he is still making adjustments and plans in moving towards his life goal, he feels that students should figure out their answers to this question, so that they have an aim to pursue and a target to work hard on.

Sam Tieh of WeBuildEasy talking about "Managing Your Finances"

Tieh shared his experience on “Managing Your Finances” based on his previous start-up which faced financial issues.

With that episode in his life, he learned the importance of keeping the personal and company finance separately. Also, he believes that there are always ways to get words spread at zero cost. His team approached BFM radio station and secured a 20-minute interview which drastically increased their brand awareness. There were even enquiries coming from Terengganu and other states in Malaysia.  He also shared ways on how students can get assistance to fund their businesses, such as getting monetary support from the government.

Andrei Beno and Viktor Kyosev from Snaplio talks about building an effective resume

Beno and Kyosev shared their experiences as employees constantly screening applicant’s resumes. They shared tips on how to build an effective resume.

Throughout the presentation, they encouraged the students to be creative and colourful when it comes to creating a resume. They also answered the biggest doubt of student--how to get experience when the job requires experience. Beno suggested to offer the employee with a trial period to get on board. Do not ask anything in return, just prove yourself, your value to the company and you will get a chance to stay. If things don’t turn out well, you still got some working experience.

Beno is commenting on students’ resumes

The workshop ended with Beno commenting on students’ resumes.
