The Public Service Department (PSD) has reduced the requirement for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia’s (SPM) Bahasa Melayu (BM) for medical graduates if they want to be appointed as Grade UD41 contract medical officers. Medical graduates who opt for it can now apply to the Malaysian Examinations Syndicate (MES) for approval to take only the BM subject as a single paper.

According to Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, they do not need to take any other SPM subjects. The SPM core subjects consisted of Science, Maths, English, Moral Studies, BM and History. In the past, medical graduates from Selangor reported that they were told to register for six core SPM subjects while graduates from other states only had to register for BM and History. On Saturday, The Star revealed that another group of medical graduates with 0 level exclusively had to take BM out of the six SPM subjects.
Bahasa Melayu is the national language and the language of the federation, hence one of the requirements for appointment into public service is a pass in BM at SPM level or a comparable level. Dr Noor Hisham states that other services schemes set higher BM credit requirements.
‘’To help ease the process for the private candidates regarding the BM requirement, the Health Ministry will have further discussions with the Education Ministry and Examinations Board,” as reported by Dr Noor Hisham.
