Hallyu U

UM students are ever curious about hallyu. They want to know about anything and everything Korean. Ever since Winter Sonata hit Malaysian shores, a whopping number of UM students have grabbed opportunities to take part in the student exchange program and traveled to Korea to see Do Min Joon-ssi.

Go Juara!

It's UM, and along with its prestige comes a certain level of disdain from non-UM students, who think everyone at UM is an arrogant jerk and will be happy to let you know just how they feel.

Once a UM Juara, always a UM Juara.

Heard of Bukit Cinta?

Yes, that famous place for UM lovebirds. It is no surprise that during your university life there is bound to romance around the campus, heck even our parents met at university. Bukit Cinta has always been a favourite because it is the perfect spot just enough to escape the hectic UM student lifestyle. Bukit Cinta which is located inside the premises of the university is also a place where a running enthusiast train.

“I Just Wanna Take A Selfie”

(Photo: http://memecenter.com/)

One thing that UM students absolutely love to do is take selfies or even groufies! No matter the time or occasion, you can be sure that they are not photo-shy. Lectures, playing sports or even waiting for the bus is fair game! One of the favorite spots that students love to take photos is right in front of Dewan Tunku Canselor. Every year the students even passers-by look forward to the time the University Malaya seal is changed to reflect the current academic year. This results to a lot of photo opportunities that all UM students seem to know. It also happens to be the place where students mingle right after graduation (even more photo snapping!).

Campus Police Were A Threat

Because the university is huge, there are a lot of people who can come in and out anytime. Taxis for example, do not need to provide identification just to come in and drop off a UM student or what-not. If you are a student and fail to show any form of identification, you are bound to be escorted outside of the university’s premises. Well, the campus police do this to weed out anyone that do not have any direct business with UM. It’s for the greater good after all!

When Sahur Has A Different Meaning

(Photo: http://www.memeaddicts.com/)

Generally University Malaya students have no clue where to eat during breaks because the campus, as I stress, is huge! But if there is something that students go to regularly, it is Sahur! The Malay word “Sahur” means ‘to fast’ but when you put it in the UM context, students know that it’s a place to hang out. There’s a stall inside UM that has an owner named Sahur and students seem to love him that he built his own following. Don’t be deceived by his fame though, he gives you value for money meals.

You know the scariest part of the UM is the Monyet (Monkey in Malay).

Interacting with the wildlife? Not a problem! They are notoriously known for wreaking havoc on campus. A friend once saw a guy frantically running to escape the jaws of a monkey as it comes for him in the vicinity of the hostels. He has yet to recover. *Lesson learned?* Leave the monkeys alone! C’s Were Never An Option

(Photo: http://www.pinterest.com/)

UM student: My grades suck this semester.
Friend: What are you talking about? You got A's, and a B.
UM student: yeah, but on the UM grading scale that means I'll get about 5 and a half beatings and I probably won't be able to see daylight on the weekends...

UM students aim to be the best of the best. ‘A’ no longer means awesome. It stands for average and anything below that is pretty unacceptable. It’s a dog eat dog world in there as they constantly strive to improve themselves in order to rise above the rest, resulting in a culture which values constant self-improvement.

And there you have it. If you are a student of UM, these will be the ones you would most likely encounter in your university life. What other signs did I miss in this list? Email me at [email protected].
