1. Try different job boards

Possibly the first place you’ll go on your part-time job search is online. We’re in the digital age - whatever that means - but most companies will recruit online. This means checking out either PartTimePost or asiaPartTime.com for part-time jobs and internship positions. It’s also never too early to whip out your LinkedIn profile. And the best part? They’re free!

2. Contact companies directly through social media

Social media, like Facebook and Twitter are great ways of levelling the playing field when it comes to jobs. Whilst it might not make you besties with the CEO of your dream company overnight, it is a great way of getting yourself in front of the people that matter. Take extra effort to find the contact details of the owner or hiring manager and add your dash of personality in your cover letter.

3. Show up in person and ask if they’re hiring

While knocking on doors to find your next big break can seem outdated, it’s still a go-to option for getting that elusive part-time job. Bookstores, coffee shops, restaurants, clothing boutiques - there are endless places you could try. Some stores even hire more employers during the holiday season, so head to town come year end and do some job hunting!

4. Look right on campus

Perhaps the most convenient part-time jobs for you are those found right where you study - your campus! Look for vacancies at cafeterias, university stores and offices. These places hire students year-round to keep business running. Campus bulletin boards and special event announcements are definitely good places to find jobs at school too.

5. Get in touch with your existing network

There’s no reason you can’t exercise your past internship contacts to find a part-time gig! Send your former supervisor an email to let him or her know you’re looking for part-time opportunities. You’ve already established yourself as a reliable worker, so he or she can direct you to any opportunities in their industry. It’s important to keep in touch with former employers so that requests like this won’t seem rude or out of the blue!

6. Ask your friends, family and acquaintances

People in your inner circle are good sources to keep in mind when looking for part-time work. Call the people in your inner circle, be it your family, your friends or closest upperclassmen and let them know you’re on the part-time job hunt. Because they have your best interests at heart, they’re sure to keep you in mind if anything comes their way.

7. Go freelance

If a 9-5 work time isn’t your thing, consider taking matters into your own hands. We all want to make money doing what we are good at, and going freelance could be a great way to monetize your strength. Whether it’s tutoring math students or editing essays, there are a host of opportunities out there. Once you figure out your niche, spread the word!

While academics come first and foremost, we do need to pay off our phone bills each month (and splurging on some new boots can’t hurt!). Use these resources to give you a good starting point. You never know what opportunities might come your way!
