5 Ways To Cope With Homesickness

November 11, 2017

EasyUni Staff

1. Make use of technology

This one’s pretty obvious, but with apps like Skype, Whatsapp, Viber and Hangouts, it’s easy to stay in touch with your loved ones. Plan out regular skype dates with your parents and friends back home! Not only will you feel happier about staying in the loop, talking to people you care about might motivate you to get out there and meet new people.

2. Make new friends

While it is not easy making new friends, especially when you miss your old ones, universities are full of interesting people. An easy way to feel better and enjoy university life more is to have people to enjoy it with. Who better to sympathize with your homesickness than other people going through it as well!

3. Personalize your room

Decorating your room may seem time-consuming and pointless at first; but, looking at your favorite poster everyday, or maybe sleeping with your favorite plushie will help you love your new room just as much as your old one. It never hurts to come back to a room that feels like home.

4. Snail mail

Nothing beats receiving care packages from home. Finding your favorite foods, plushies and cute notes from your mom can make your day. (Remember to send some care packages to your friends who are away from home too.)

5. Visit home! (But only once)

Visiting home may seem like a good idea, especially if you live close by. But it could also keep you from moving on and adapting to the challenge that is living alone. Limit your visits home--let yourself go home when you need it, but make sure it doesn't turn into a weekly habit.
