Pursuing tertiary education can be a daunting journey because you are now responsible for your own destiny. From one chapter to the next, one may have doubts about whether they are making the right choice.
Some people may have difficulty sleeping at night because they are concerned about choosing the wrong path. If you are one of them, worry less as we will share a few signs that should convince you that you are ready to take the leap of faith.
1. You are certain of what you will pursue.
This cannot be stressed enough, but one of the many signs that you are prepared to take a bachelor’s degree is that you have done your research on the degree. Before you begin, you should be completely aware of what courses you are taking; the syllabus that will be taught; how you will be evaluated and what you will earn from pursuing the degree.
Of course, there may be some loopholes here and there, but as long as you are willing to learn new things and be more open-minded when encountering new knowledge, you are on the right track. As the saying goes, no pain no gain.
2. You have a clear vision of your future.
When we talk about the future, we don't mean 10 or 15 years from now, but rather where you will be once you graduate from university. You should have a mental image of yourself doing something you enjoy in 5 years. Therefore, you must understand that when you enrol in a specific programme, you must ensure that you will give your all and make full use of the knowledge when you enter the workforce one day.
There’s no doubt that you may discover new interests along the way, which is fine, as long as you are able to juggle them. Know that your diverse experiences will not only help you grow as a person, but will also set you apart from the crowd.
3. You know that you are contributing to society.
Many people may not realise that we have a responsibility to contribute to society while we live in it. If you recognise your social role in society, you will be able to make full use of your degree and help to open doors to better-paying job opportunities for disadvantaged groups, which will have a direct impact on the overall progress of the community.
That way, everyone has an equal opportunity to enjoy a high quality of living and a rewarding career that allows them to attain their full potential. This also demonstrates how education can not only reduce poverty within a community but also improve everyone's health due to the knowledge offered by professionals.
It's okay to feel unprepared right now
It may seem strange, but many people actually find themselves unprepared when seeking a bachelor’s degree. Many reasons could have caused this, from the pressure of family members to peer influence. However, it is important to understand that it is alright to be uncertain about the degree you want to pursue for now. Instead, you should recognise this as a sign that you care for your future, and do your research the best you can to find the ideal degree for yourself.
Remember to do your research
So, while you're at it, make sure to do your homework and worry less. If you are not ready for a degree, you have plenty of time to do your research and speak to other individuals who have the necessary experience. Perhaps, listening to other people's experience will give you a better insight into your decision and future.
On another note, if you checked all the boxes indicating that you are prepared for a degree, you are set to go! Be ready for anything that may occur. There will be ups and downs, but as long as you put your heart into it, everything will be OK!
